Hello Asian Canadian Studies Forum!

Gendai is a Toronto-based culturally-specific arts organization that addresses the East-Asian diasporic community in North America. Over the past 10 years we have supported, programmed and exhibited cultural heritage and experimental contemporary art projects addressing subjects as varied as the internment of Japanese-Canadians and the exploration of a Chinese enclave of SecondLife to a year-long residency that blurred the boundaries between architecture and curatorial practice.
For 2013 Gendai intends to take on the controversial figure of the "Model Minority" with a programme of screenings and workshops aimed at intensifying our understanding of such a notion. It will culminate in 2014 with two artist commissions and a publication kit that distills content generated in the workshops as well as functioning as a resource/archive of references collected throughout the project.
However, this is a crucial moment for us to garner support and strength in order to keep Gendai alive but we can't do it alone. That's why we are asking our existing communities and reaching out to new ones for support! Every little bit counts, but if you find that this is not the best moment for you, sharing our message widely is also immensely helpful!
We thank you for taking the time to read our message, and look forward to the potential connections that may emerge from this contact!
