Toronto City Council Adopts Motion Criticizing Maclean's


TORONTO, Dec. 17, 2010--Toronto members of a growing national coalition of Canadians against racial profiling in media today congratulate members of Toronto City Council for passing a motion that asks Maclean’s magazine to “apologize unreservedly for the negative stereotyping of the Asian Canadian community” in a recent article.

“Big kudos to all the community folks who called, emailed, and contacted their Councillors,” says Roland Sintos Coloma, co-director of the Centre for Integrative Anti-Racism Studies at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto.

“A big shout out to the various student unions from University of Toronto, Ryerson, and York, as well as community groups, such as Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter, Toronto Federation of Chinese Parents, and Canadian Arab Federation, for the emails to the Council,” Coloma added. “This is the power of a coalition coming together!”

Support for the motion, put forward by Councillor Mike Layton and seconded by Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, was consolidated through concerted efforts by the Youth Coalition Against Maclean’s, working closely with students unions at University of Toronto, Ryerson University and York University.

“Cross-Canada support for action to fight racism, in all its forms, is growing,” says Brad Lee, who started a Facebook page on the topic that is trending toward 17,500 daily hits. (

Similar motions have been passed in Victoria, Vancouver and New Westminster, B.C. York Regional Council is also considering asking Maclean’s to apologize.
